Matthew Taylor is a popular local MP and is higher profile status as Lib Dem Shadow Chancellor (along with a 12,000 majority) should ensure of him of a strong win here in what has long been a true yellow seat.
02/05/01 PC Email:
One day the Lib Dems pro-European agenda must come home to roost in the deeply sceptical Cornish seats. Matthew Taylor is nowhere near as popular as his predecessor, David Penhaligon, as seen by his vote in '97 which dropped despite the implosion of the Tories. Taylor has to be particularly vulnerable as the Lib Dem treasury spokesman in a constituency which wants none of his Euros. The '99 Euro and local elections saw big wins for the Conservatives and the general election 2001 could produce one of the shocks of the night.
