As safe a Labour seat as you will ever find. Labour hold every single council seat in this constituency, even after some pretty ropey mid-term results in May 2000. Ian McCartney, a Scotsman and veteran trades unionist, who is seen as a standard bearer for the traditional heartlands of the party, is seen as a likely candidate for a Cabinet position after the election.
