With a massive 27,000 majority, it's hard to see Labour losing here. However, it will be interesting to see whether the Lib Dems are able to consolidate the second-placing they won both in 1992 and 1997, profiting from their new-found high-profile status in Liverpool with a huge majority on the city council.

This constituency doesn't just have Liberal Democrats, it has old-style plain 'Liberals' as well. The candidate of the latter, who finished ahead of the LDs and Tories in the 97 general election (the only minority party candidate in the country to finish second), is Steve Radford, a hyperactive councillor who polled 86% in Tuebrook ward in last year's local election. He will however be hindered by the fact that his splinter party of six on the council has now split into two separate groups with one councillor joining the LDs. Labour's Bob Wareing will win big here despite a bitter reselection battle and criticism of his support for the Serbian cause during the Nineties.

To correct your appalling error or deliberate distortion. Steve Radford (Liberal Party Candidate) came 2nd in 1997. He is the main challenger to the incumbent this time round, the Liberal Party having built firmly on their vote in local elections over the past 4 years.
