| Over the years the LibDems have flattered only to deceive in this mixture of commuter-land and countryside. They control the Borough Council but their local party is torn from top to bottom after a major row involving the Council leader's links with a property developer and a big Council tax rise. Ann Winterton, anti-abortion crusader and wife of Nicholas Winterton ( the MP for the neighbouring seat of Macclesfield) should hold on. The LDs will manage a respectable second place, but no more than that. |

| Unfortunately it's true: the local Liberals, and now Liberal Democrats, have always been a motley crew. Shame really; this is prime Lib Dem country and Mrs Winterton is a non-MP if ever there was one. |
