Sir Michael Shersby died just nine days after being reelected by a 700 vote majority. Labour pulled all the stops out in a July 1997 byelection but were hampered by a row over their candidate - a local leftwinger who had run it close against Shersby was barred from the shortlist by party HQ. There was a swing of 5% back to the Tories and local department store owner John Randall - one of the very few Tory MPs with a beard - won by 3500. Labour are defending a lot of crucial marginals in North and West London and will have better things to do than target a seat they couldn't win at the height of their post election honeymoon.

One seat I wouldn't put money on. Unless the bet is that it's going to be close. Okay, Labour put its foot in it here in 97 (typical Blairism) but if there is a national swing to Labour, tactical voting, and a continuation of the trend away from the Tories in London, Labour must be in with a shout.

I think he's the only Tory MP with a beard, isn't he? And he has the advantage of being well-known as a local businessman, and he won the first by-election for the Conservatives since William Hague in 1989! I can't see him losing it.
